Understanding Your Facebook Insights

Recently one of my clients asked
“Where to find analytics on your Facebook Fan Page?”
[Tweet “”Where to find analytics on your Facebook Fan Page?””]
I’m a data nerd!
I love to look at data, analyze it, pull it apart.
I’m the type of person that will love to get the raw data that Facebook has and create my OWN dashboards!
But they won’t give that data to me! 🙁
So given my nerd tendencies, one of the first things I looked for when starting to build my Facebook Fan Page was…….
where’s my data!?!?
The funny thing is it’s not that difficult.
But there are a few things that you want to keep in mind when going over your Facebook Insights.
Facebook has made assumption that if you’re in business there are a few things that you want to know about your Fan Page.
Namely ………

  1. Likes
  2. Reach
  3. Visits
  4. Posts
  5. People

Facebook Likes

Raw numbers will always interest you right?
You want to know how many people like your page.
You want to know how many people are liking your page over time
AND!!!
You want to know are these likes paid for versus organic.

Facebook Reach

The next area is naturally reach.
How many people are even seeing your Fan Page.
That’s obviously where you start.
It’s like Walgreens putting up a store at a busy street corner and then putting a HUGE BLACK CANOPY over the store!
No one will know that they are there!
So think of your REACH as the unveiling of your Fan Page for others to see!

Facebook Visits

Moving onto Facebook visits.
Basically where are people visiting your page from,
where are the landing
and where are the liking your Fan Page from.
This is pretty important because……
if you think about it …….
a person standing in the line at the bank (if people still do such a HORRIBLE thing)
is on their phone and they are scrolling through ……. their news feed!
Up pops your Fan Page.
The like button is right there.
They may like your cover page, your profile picture….. the words….. but they like it right there!
And then they keep on going!

They never really “visited” your page did they?
So they don’t know what your page has to offer right?
So that’s data you want to understand right?
Because I’m assuming now that you want more people ON your Fan Page?

Great!
So moving on……

Facebook Posts

This is where data gets lovely!
I’ll leave this section for the video below.

People

Now at first you may think that we’re spying on people on Facebook who like your Fan Page.
NO!
Facebook really does an excellent job of taking care of security.
But they give you basic information.
Where are your fans
Who are you fans
What age group
What time are they on your page!
It even gives you general cities.
This is probably the most important aspect of Facebook Insights.

Why?
Because you want to sell stuff right?
You’re in business to do what exactly?
If you’re not comfortable with the word selling then let’s say you’re performing transactions!
Better?
Either way you’re performing transactions with PEOPLE

So having a handle on your data is important to understanding how you can better serve your customers through Facebook!

Lesson learned from sales training over the years .. Those that keep score “WIN” . You don’t have to obsess over it but you do need to know what your ROI is for your efforts.
